Manatees Near Orlando: Kayak or Snorkel, and When to Go
5 min read
Short answer: for a first manatee outing, book the two-hour guided kayak tour and go in the cooler months. Snorkelling with manatees is a long day trip, not an evening activity.
Why winter matters
Manatees move to warm springs when the water cools. At Crystal River, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sets the manatee season from 15 November to 31 March, when the seven warm-water manatee sanctuaries in Kings Bay are in effect, and allows paddle craft inside Three Sisters Springs only from 1 April to 14 November (Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge). Florida State Parks says that from mid-November to March hundreds of manatees gather in the spring run at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City, where the swimming season runs from 1 April to 14 November (Blue Spring State Park). The park also posts a notice, effective 2 November 2026, that the French Landing boat ramp and the canoe and kayak rentals and launches are closed.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission keeps a list of places to see manatees. If your date is outside winter, read what the booking page of your tour says about sightings.
The offers
| Offer | Length | Price | Rating | What the listing says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kayak tour with manatee encounter | 2 hours | €85.76 | 4.8 (239) | Beginner-friendly, guided; manatees, sunbathing gators and basking turtles |
| Small-group manatee and wildlife kayak tour | 2 hours | €71.24 | 4.9 (211) | Beginner-friendly small group with naturalist guides |
| Manatee snorkel tour with lunch and hotel pickup | 11 hours | €150.50 | 4.6 (107) | Snorkel with manatees at Crystal River, picnic lunch, Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park; pickup from the Disney, Universal and SeaWorld area |
| Dolphin and manatee eco boat tour from Cocoa Beach | 2 hours | €62.34 | 4.8 (116) | Small group, wild dolphins and manatees, historic launch sites |
Prices are per person. Both kayak tours give 2398 W French Ave in Orange City as their address. The small-group tour names French Landing as its starting point and paddles in Blue Spring State Park; the other says it launches near springs in winter and sends the exact meeting point the day before. With the French Landing launch reported closed, ask the operator where your tour starts before you book. The Cocoa Beach boat tour starts at Kelly Park on Merritt Island and says dolphins are seen on every tour and manatees on most.
Kayak or snorkel
The kayak tours are two hours and described as beginner-friendly; the first lists non-swimmers, people with back problems and babies under one year as not suitable. The snorkel trip takes eleven hours with pickup from the Disney, Universal and SeaWorld area, and its booking page lists a $15 wetsuit fee, paid on site at the dive shop. In the water at Crystal River you are in a wildlife refuge: the refuge does not run manatee tours itself but issues permits to operators in Kings Bay, and the FWC asks visitors to give manatees space and not to disturb them when they are resting.
Our recommendation
For most visitors: the guided two-hour kayak tour. It is the most reviewed of the four offers and takes only two hours of your day. Choose the snorkel trip only if swimming near manatees is the reason you came and you accept a long day. If you are also looking at wildlife by airboat, see our airboat guide, and the full range is on our manatee kayak page.
